3 Description
The EMB1433Q is a protection chip that provides an
additional layer of safety to the regular battery stack
voltage acquisition chain. The EMB1433Q device can
monitor a stack of 6 to 14 cells, with a maximum of
60 V at the top of the stack and can support a multi-
module battery pack architecture. Device functions
are independent from the main acquisition path,
providing a layer of redundancy to the battery system.
An internal flag signal is asserted any time that either
one or more cells of the stack are outside a “safety”
voltage window (undervoltage, overvoltage) or the
voltage on the positive pin of the external thermistor
connected to the pin AUX exceeds a customer
selectable threshold (AUXTH).
The high and low window thresholds (HTH, LTH) and
the auxiliary threshold (AUXTH) are set through
external resistor dividers. EMB1433Q relies on an
independent, 1 wire daisy chain fault communication
channel that does not require galvanic isolation
components. This fault communication channel
transmits a heart beat signal to indicate that no fault
condition is present. In the event of a broken
communication wire, the EMB1433Q of the module
located immediately downstream the broken wire will
interrupt the heart beat signal transmission on
DOUT_LS pin and this will be reflected in cascade to
the remaining of the daisy chain down to ground
level. Since the top module EMB1433Q will not have
its high side communication pin attached to a higher
level module, it is necessary to identify it by setting
TOP_MOD=High logic level in order to avoid to
misinterpreting the lack of up connection as a broken
wire. CELLN <3:0> digital input pins will have to be
configured in case fewer than 14 cells need to be
monitored. Any “flag” condition will be ignored unless
it lasts longer than a programmable mask time tMASK,
then a “fault” will be issued by interrupting heart beat
signal on the HEART pin and the 1-wire daisy-chain
fault communication channel will also interrupt heart
beat signal towards the bottom of the stack. A
“healthy” battery pack will have all the HEART signals
of the stack beating.
All the LS_DOUT pins will be injecting a pulsing
current (200 µA) into the adjacent module LS_DIN.
EMB1433Q supports an additional fault
communication system based on the “ping” function:
it is based on a 1-wire bidirectional channel. The
central microprocessor will issue a pulse that will be
received by the first module, delayed , relayed to the
next level and so on with additional delay at each
step up to the top module. Each module will send
back to the central microprocessor a set of pulses
carrying the information about any possible fault
mode that module might be experiencing (UV,OV,OT)
.The “fault” function and the “ping” function are
independent, each one requiring its own wire.
EMB1433Q outputs a ±0.25%, 4.5 V VREF_OUT line.
Through 3 resistor dividers it is possible, using
precise external resistors, to set HTH, LTH, and
AUXTH.
