Technical note
LRI2K, an RFID IC with EAS and privacy protection
for smart library labels
Introduction
The purpose of this technical note is to show that the LRI2K RFID IC is particularly suited to
library label applications. The LRI2K is a 2048-bit EEPROM tag IC that operates at a
frequency of 13.56 MHz. It is delivered in wafer form by STMicroelectronics to its partners
who can then offer it in different library label forms: 45 × 75 mm or 50 × 50 mm inlay, 35 mm
diameter antenna (see Figure 1 for an illustration).
The LRI2K’s main features relevant for library label applications are the following:
■ Standard compliance
– ISO15693
– ISO18000-3 Mode 1
– 13.56 MHz ISM (industrial, medical and scientific) band
■ User data
– True 2048-bit user memory with write protection capability
■ Configuration data
– 64-bit unique identifier (UID)
– 8-bit AFI (EAS support)
– 8-bit DSFID
– 32-bit Kill password
■ Security
– 64-bit unique identifier (UID)
– EAS (electronic article surveillance) based on AFI (application family identifier)
security mechanism
– Write protection mechanism for each user memory block
– Write protection mechanism for AFI/EAS, DSFID
– Password protected Kill function (consumer privacy protection)
■ Performance
– Best-in-class Read/Write range
– Fast inventory and data transfer mode
– Fast programming time
– up to 1 000 000 Write cycles
– 40-year data retention guaranteed
■ Library standard
– Compliant with ISO TC46/SC4
– AFI-based security solution for EAS
– Meets the emerging NISO (US national information standards organization) data
model standard for libraries
– Multiple media format code identifier for books, DVDs, tapes, journals or any other
library items
