There are several style LS coils used so it
is important to verify that the PN 8285 is
the correct coil for your application prior to
disassembly. The PN 8285 was designed for
LS1/LS6 based engine platforms.
IMPORTANT: Notice that the MSD Coil has a
2-Pin connector (Figure 1). This 2-Pin connector
must be plugged in to the coil. If not, the coil
will not operate.
MOUNTING
The MSD Coil is designed to be a direct
replacement but due to the number of
applications available, the mounting of the coils
may be slightly different. MSD has supplied
different hardware to assist in mounting the
MSD Coil. The OEM backets and the holes
SHIM
are designed to be self tapping. MSD supplies
stainless steel hardware which is softer and

should not be used to create new threads. It is
recommended to use the original coil retaining bolts to tap and chase the threads before installing
the new MSD stainless steel bolts. You can also use an M5x0.8 tap to chase the mounting holes.
1. Remove the coils covers (if present) from the valve covers.
2. Remove the spark plug wire from the coil.
3. Disconnect the factory connector, remove the coil retaining bolts and remove the coil.
